This clears mental space and prevents important tasks from slipping through the cracks. You can then sort or categorize these items into to-do lists, schedules, or notes for the future.
How to do it:
- Schedule 10 to 15 minutes a few times a week to do a brain dump. Set an alarm to remind you to actually do this!
- Use bullet points or short phrases—no need for perfection here.
- Group similar items into categories: household chores, work tasks, kids’ activities, personal errands, etc.
2. Adopt a Planner System That Works for You
The perfect planner doesn’t exist—because each mom’s needs are unique. Maybe you love a digital tool like Google Calendar that syncs across all your devices, or perhaps an old-fashioned paper planner with color-coded pens is more your style, or maybe this kind works best for you! However, if you know the kids are in daycare on a Wednesday morning for 3 hours, this is the time to plan to do laundry, or meal prep for the week, or do a thorough cleaning around the house!

Waiting in the car line at school pickup? Don’t let that 10-15 minutes go to waste! Listen to an audiobook, respond to emails, or plan your dinner menu. My kid’s middle school had a park right beside it, so I would go for a walk while waiting for the kids to come out. It was a really nice break, before all the craziness started! Turning idle time into productive time adds up.

I like to take this one step further, so when I cook a meal, I always cook double, so now I have enough food for my teens to either take for lunch, or for dinner the next day!

Waking up even 15 to 30 minutes before the rest of the house can give you precious alone time to journal, exercise, prep breakfast, or simply sip coffee in peace. A calm, productive morning sets a positive tone for the entire day.
