#1 Start Getting Up Earlier Than The Kids
Waking up early is the key to a productive morning routine. Set your alarm to go off before the kids get a chance to wake up! Ideally, you want to give yourself an hour alone in the morning before everyone else wakes up. This time is essential for establishing calmness and mental preparedness necessary to tackle your day.
However, an hour isn’t always feasible, especially i you’ve been up during the night with a sick child! If you can only give yourself 30 minutes, or even 15 minutes, that works too! Any time you can give yourself in the morning will greatly benefit you!
Mornings are ideal for working on your goals or just getting some along time.
I know that right now you are saying to yourself – there is now way I can get up any earlier than I already do!
I said the same thing to myself!
My family and I lived in an RV for 5 years traveling the country (yes, it was as epic as it sounds)! However, there is very little space in an RV, so I found my mornings were NEVER my own, because I got up at the same time as the kids, got breakfast and got straight to homeschooling and then to work!
I never had a chance to wake up gradually, it was full speed ahead!
It was too much, too early, too fast!
I woke up feeling stressed and irritated!
It was not a good way to start my day!
I then started to wake up a little earlier to have a cup of tea on my own and take some time for me, I absolutely loved the quiet time, it was bliss!
I didn’t immediately go from getting up at 7am → 5am, it took me a while to create this new habit.
I started at 6:55, and then quickly realized I loved this alone time and needed more of it.
Gradually, I woke up a little earlier, and then a little more, until 5am became the norm!
My son is an early riser, so sometimes he would be up at 6am, which is why 5am worked for me.
It took a while for it to become a routine, but now I would consider myself a morning person.
I am up at 5am most days, even when I don’t need to be (not kidding!).
I enjoy it, because I have time on my own to enjoy my tea and take a breather before my day starts!
You can too!
Now, I’m not saying you have to get up at 5am, but for you, 6:30 might give you the time you need or maybe just 15 minutes early will make a difference in your life!
#2 Stretch and Exercise
Now, I’m not saying you should get up and go for a 5 mile run at 6 in the morning, that doesn’t appeal to many of us, sometimes just getting out of bed is exercise enoug, am I righth!!
Just get moving as soon as you get out of bed – literally. Doing some gentle stretches or exercises can help energize you and get your blood flowing. Not only is it good for your physical health, but it will also help clear your mind, improve your mood, and set a positive tone for the day ahead.
This could be 5 minutes or 30 minutes, it really is just to get you moving.
#3 Turn Your Coffee Machine On
Let’s face it, most of us need coffee to function in the morning. That’s why the big item on my checklist is to turn on your coffee machine. Whether you prefer a drip coffee maker, a French press, or a single-serve machine, or even tea like me, make sure it’s set up and ready to go the night before. That way, all you have to do in the morning is press a button and let it do it’s job while you do some other tasks.
I need my cup of tea in the morning before I face the world, so if anything should happen, like my alarm not going off, I know that my coffee pot just needs to be turned on and my tea will be ready ASAP! I even leave a cup beside the pot in the evening time, so no matter what happens in the morning, all I have to do is pour myself a cup of tea! Me without tea is not going to work!
#4 Make Your Bed
The best thing you can do in the morning is to make your bed before you leave your bedroom.
There is nothing worse than walking into your room at night only to find out you forgot to make your bed, and now have to make it before you get into it!
Now, you might think making your bed is no big deal, but let me tell you, it sets the tone for an awesome day and gives you an instant boost of accomplishment.
Believe it or not, a tidy house can make you feel like a total boss, even if others don’t think it’s a big deal. And here’s the kicker – it can actually motivate you to tackle more tasks throughout the day, giving you that sweet sense of momentum.
And let’s not forget the cherry on top – coming home to a perfectly made bed after a long day is pure bliss. That way, you can wind down and get super snug at the end of the day.
#5 Head to the Bathroom!
One crucial step in your morning routine is giving yourself some well-deserved bathroom time.
Starting your day with a trip to the bathroom is absolutely essential for keeping yourself fresh and energized.
Freshen up in the bathroom by washing your face with cold water to wake up your senses. Then, get dressed for the day.
Doing this helps you feel more prepared and ready to tackle your tasks for the day.
Remember, after you do your teeth and face, wipe down the bathroom sink so it’s nice and clean for bedtime!
#6 Journal With Your Coffee
If you’re looking for a way to clear your mind and focus your thoughts, try journaling in the morning. Grab a notebook and a pen, sit down with your coffee, and write down your goals, priorities, or any concerns you may have. It’s a simple practice that can help you ground yourself and prepare for the day ahead.
Now, if you prefer to turn on your favorite tv show for 15 minutes to enjoy with your coffee – go for it!
#7 Fill Up Your Water Bottle
It’s so important to stay hydrated, especially in the morning. After a long night’s sleep, your body needs water to jumpstart your metabolism and give you the energy you need to get going. Keep a glass of water next to your bed and make sure to drink it first thing in the morning. Trust me, your body will thank you.
If you forget to do this, fill up your water cup in the morning (before the kids get up), so you are always drinking water throughout the day! I like this cup because it keeps my water cold, (I got mine on sale), or this one is also great because you can see how much water you are drinking!
We need to hydrate our bodies, but with everything else going on, it sometimes gets missed, doing this will help ensure that doesn’t happen!
#8 Empty the Dishwasher
Start your day off right by emptying your dishwasher before the littles wake up! It’s the ultimate organization hack that will keep your kitchen running smoothly. Trust me, doing this every night has transformed my mornings from chaos to calm.
And if your kids are old enough, delegate this task to them and get it off your plate. My daughter (13) empties the dishwasher every morning, and puts any dishes that didn’t make it into the dishwasher the night before. This is a huge help for me.
If you don’t have a child old enough to help out, doing it yourself won’t take long. I sometimes put on the tv or listen to music or a podcast while I do this!. Even the littles can help with this chore, have them help with their utensils and bowls – nothing glass though.
Emptying the dishwasher in the morning can bring a significant change to your routine. It’s super easy, it only takes a few minutes, and it prepares you for a smoother day ahead.
You’ve got this!
#9 Press Start On Your Washing Machine
Picture this: it’s nighttime, and you’re prepping for the next day. You toss some clothes in the washing machine along with some detergent. Easy peasy, right, it takes less than 5 minutes, maybe a little more if you’re picking clothes up off the floor. Check out my best laundry tips so this doesn’t happen!.
Now, here’s where it gets awesome. In the morning, all you have to do is hit that “Start” button, and your machine starts doing its job, while you’re busy taking care of your little ones.
Talk about multitasking!
And the best part? By the time your kids are munching on their breakfast, you can effortlessly transfer the freshly washed clothes into the dryer. No fuss, no hassle.
Today, your laundry will practically take care of itself. Time to kick back and enjoy the chaos-free morning!
#10 Eat a Good Breakfast
As a mom, it’s important that you never skip breakfast! Eating a nutritious breakfast can give you the energy and mental focus you need to get through the morning. Make it a habit of eating whole foods that are rich in protein and fiber to keep you feeling full and fuel your body.
Consider yummy options like oatmeal, smoothies, or eggs with toast to make sure you’re getting the protein punch you need to power through your day. These can be made ahead of time, like on a Sunday when your husband is home and you have time on your own.
There are so many delicious choices out there that will leave you feeling satisfied and fabulous. Personally, my go-to is a lazy breakfast sandwich with eggs & cheese on toast, or granola and yoghurt!
So go ahead, treat yourself, mama! Start your day off right with something you love and totally deserve!
Also, take the time to enjoy and savor your breakfast mindfully, away from digital distractions. If you have done all of the above, enjoy breakfast with your littles.
A morning routine is a great way to kickstart your day and boost overall productivity. Add these tips to your morning routine checklist and try to create one that works for you. Start with simple habits and let them evolve into something that fits your lifestyle and needs. Don’t forget to stick to it and make it a habit. A little self-care in the morning goes a long way in making your day better!
Let’s recap, here are 10 simple tasks to do every morning to start your day off right.
- Wake up before the kids.
- Stretch and exercise.
- Turn your coffee machine on.
- Make your bed.
- Head to the bathroom.
- Journal with your coffee.
- Fill up your water bottle.
