Let’s get started!
Key Takeaways
- Decluttering your bedroom is the first critical step to creating an organized space. Use a simple system to sort items, invest in storage solutions, and establish a regular cleaning routine to maintain a streamlined environment.
- After decluttering, assign a specific home for each item to ensure ongoing tidiness and functionality. Return free-floating items back to other rooms as needed, and tackle organization projects one at a time for efficiency.
- Store shoes off the floor using shoe racks or hanging organizers, keep nightstand drawers orderly with dividers, and leverage creative solutions like towel bars with shower curtain hooks for jewelry storage to maximize your bedroom organization.
1. Declutter Your Room First
The first step in any organizational endeavor is decluttering. It’s like clearing the canvas before starting a new painting. Decluttering your bedroom is a must do before you start to transform your room and clear it of all clutter!
So, where do you begin? Start small, focusing on one area of the room to avoid feeling overwhelmed and gradually get your space organized.
As you declutter, create four piles:
- Bin
- Donate
- Store
- Keep
This will streamline the decision-making process and help you organize items accordingly. Consider investing in storage furniture, such as an ottoman or drawer storage bed, to accommodate your decluttering efforts and maintain an organized space. Don’t forget the small stuff. Use small decorative dishes, trays, or bowls to neatly contain essential items that can’t be stored away.
Once you’ve decluttered, keep up the good work! Maintain your decluttered space with a daily routine that includes making the bed, putting clothes away promptly, and resetting the room each day to prevent clutter from accumulating again. Also, conduct regular decluttering sweeps of your bedroom, allocating 30 minutes each week, which can be broken into shorter sessions, to maintain a streamlined space.
2. Find a home for each item
Now that you’ve decluttered, it’s time to find a home for each item. This is crucial for maintaining a tidy space and ensuring that every item has a designated spot. The goal here is to get everything removed from surfaces the eye can see. So if you have a book on your bedside table – can it be moved to a drawer? If you have jewelry sitting out, can it be put in a jewelry box, put your cash in your handbag.
If your bedroom tends to become a catch-all for items from other rooms, set aside time to return things to their proper place. Place a box or a basket on a table and put all items that need to leave your room in here.
This simple act can significantly reduce clutter.
Also, when organizing, focus on one area at a time, like a vanity or dresser, so you don’t become overwhelmed but you do see what you’re doing is making a difference!
Keeping your bedroom organized will make a huge difference in the overall appearance and functionality of the space
3. Keep surfaces clear of items
Alright, let’s talk about keeping surfaces clear in the bedroom. It may seem like a small thing, but trust me, it’s a huge deal when it comes to making your space look nice. No one wants to walk into a room and be greeted by a cluttered dresser or a cluttered nightstand. Not only does it look messy, but it can also be a source of stress as you try to navigate through piles of stuff just to find your phone charger.
Having your dresser or table clutter free makes a huge difference in your bedroom. If you have hair supplies laying around, move them to the bathroom and put them in an organizer like this cute one.
So next time you’re tempted to toss your clothes on top of your dresser, resist the urge and take a few extra seconds to put them away. Your space (and your sanity) will thank you.
Doing a regular decluttering clean in your room especially around your nightstand and dressers to help you keep them clutter free will help you tremendously! This can be easily done in a few minutes if you do it every week.
Also, investing in furniture with built-in storage options can provide hidden spaces to store items, and helps to keep any surfaces that can be seen clean and tidy! Here’s a bedside table with a built in charging station to organize all your electronics! Boxes like these work tremendously well to hide items that normally layaround, but you want to make sure that you declutter these weekly!
4. Use small bins to divide up nightstand drawers
Let’s move onto your nightstand drawers! If you keep certain items in your nightstand, I highly encourage you to buy some small bins or drawer dividers to keep things in order and easy to find. Organizers are key to a tidy bedside setup. I keep pens in mine because I make lists all the time, I also keep a notebook, my book and my glasses so I use an organizer to keep things clear to where I can actually find what I need!
You need to figure out what you will be keeping in your drawer before you start researching organizers. If you only keep a few items in there, something small like this will work. Try different bin styles to match your storage needs. Stackable bins work wonders in deep drawers, making it simple to keep things separate and within reach. Something like these divers would work well for your whole house or at least a good chunk of it!
5. Add a charging station
In this digital age, we all have multiple electronic devices that need charging, often leading to a tangled mess of cords on our nightstands. Adding a charging station to your bedroom can help keep everything organized and charged, and you can find what you need when you need them! I purchased one for our room, and it has worked super well.
A power strip can be placed in the top drawer of the nightstand, with the cord and plug threaded through a hole and plugged into the nearest outlet. To keep the power strip in place, you can use sticky Velcro dots to attach it to the bottom of the drawer, so no-one see it.
For a wireless option, you can use a wireless charging pad that looks cute on your bedside table to charge your devices.
6. Use a storage ottoman
Another awesome way to store items away out of sight is a storage bench or trunk that can be put at the foot of your bed. A storage ottoman not only give you extra storage space AND somewhere to sit, plus they look really stylish, like this one.
This way, you have somewhere to put your bedding, linens, or seasonal clothes even, I’ve heard some people use them to store shoes. You can really put just about anything in there! .

Wall hooks can be a lifesaver when it comes to bedroom organization. By installing a few inside your closet, you can create additional hanging storage for yourself. Hooks allow for quick and easy access and for you to use up that empty wall space and put it to good use.
There are several types of wall hooks to choose from, depending on your needs. Adhesive hooks can be installed without tools and are a non-permanent solution so if you prefer not to drill holes in your closet walls, this would work well for you.
8. Add a dresser in the closet
Incorporating a dresser within your walk in closet is another brilliant idea to maximize storage space and keep your bedroom clutter-free. I have one in mine, so does my husband and both of my kids have one. They are very much used, so I highly recommend a dresser, dressers are total lifesavers for staying organized! I store underwear, pajamas, and my yoga pants in mine..

Use it as a bedside table to store books, magazines, and other bedtime essentials. Or roll it into your closet to keep shoes, accessories, or even folded clothes neatly organized. The best part? You can easily move it around to change up your space whenever you want.
15. Wall Hooks
Instead of leaving your necklaces and bracelets tangled in a drawer, hang them on decorative hooks on the wall. You can even mix and match different hooks for a unique look that reflects your personal style.
