How To Make Your Own Baby Safe Floor Cleaning Products
While these great products are available, some people do prefer to create their own home clean6ing solutions. I totally support that idea!
If you want 7do to make your own, there are some simple ingredients that you probably already have at home that you can use to clean your floors and kill germs. Many of these ingredients are safe for all sorts of cleaning jobs and will save you tons of money in the long run.
Your little one will thank you for using chemical-free floor cleaners as they are kept safe while walking and crawling around your home.
Option 1: Warm Water
This is very simple way to clean your floors quickly. You can clean stains, dust and clear other bacteria off of surfaces with it. While it won’t really disinfect, warm water or hot water is a good option for in-between cleaning sessions to keep the floor clean or pick up a small spill. Add a touch of safe dish soap for extra cleaning power.
Option 2: Baking Soda
You might be sick and tired of hearing how baking soda can be used to clean anything and everything, but it holds true for floors as well.
Add the natural power of baking soda to your warm water solution when washing your floor to help with removing stains and marks. It is also good on toys, counters, and kitchen and bathroom fixtures. Once dissolved, you can put it into a spray bottle to spritz on the floor as you go.
Option 3: Vinegar With Essential Oils
Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and it works well on floors as well. You can always add a few drops of essential oils like lemon oil to your warm water and vinegar solution to keep the smell at bay and create a bright lemon scent. Once the vinegar dries up, you can’t smell the it at all, it is only potent while you clean.
To use vinegar on your floors, add vinegar and warm water to a large bucket at a ratio of 1/2 cup vinegar per gallon of water and start mopping. It’s very simple, effective, and healthy.
Option 4: Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a safe and effective cleaner for all baby areas. You can use it to disinfect toys and it is great for most floors. Use 1/2 cup peroxide per gallon of water.
- If your floors are particularly grimy or greasy, just add a touch of dish soap (like Dawn) to help cut the grime.
- Make a little extra and put it in a spray bottle for touch ups later.
- For laminate floors, make sure to keep your mop very well rung out. No excess water on these floors.
Ingredients in Cleaning Products You Should Avoid
I used to buy a lot of store-bought all-purpose cleaners. I would buy them without really looking at the ingredients, just assuming they were all safe.
But then I started doing some research into harmful cleaning products, and realized that many of the cleaning products I was using contained harmful chemicals (Yikes!), they were certainly not a kid-friendly floor cleaners! The Environmental Working Group did a study that found that up to 53% of common household cleaners had very harmful or toxic chemicals.
Now I use baby-safe cleaner, and natural cleaning products in my home. It is much better for the baby, as well as your own personal wellness.
Many cleaning products contain chlorine bleach. Bleach is a corrosive chemical that can irritate your eyes and can cause irritation to your or your baby’s skin, especially if you are sensitive.
It can also damage your respiratory system if you inhale it.
Ammonia is a toxic gas that can mess up your respiratory health if you inhale it, imagine what it could do to your pets or baby!
Here is a list of the ingredients you should avoid.
- Chlorine Bleach.
- Quaternary Ammonium Compounds
- Glycol Ethers
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
- Sodium Hypochlorite
When you read toxic, cautious, dangerous or harmful on a cleaning product label, just move on. Should your baby come in contact with any of these, wash immediately with a baby-safe body wash, and if ingested, call poison control.
Why Should You Use A Baby Safe Floor Cleaning Product?
If you are using a bleach-based floor cleaner to disinfect and deep clean your floors, you are putting your own health and your babies’ health at risk. These cleaners contain harsh ingredients that can be harmful if ingested.
Bleach-based cleaners can cause irritation in the airways, affect allergies, and cause sensitive skin breakouts and eye irritations. Baby and pet-safe floor cleaners are a great way to reduce your child’s exposure to harmful chemicals.
The chemical ingredients in these bleach-based products can really cause harm to any member of the family. As a parent, one of our key priorities is keeping our children safe, and away from things that can have a negative effect on them.
A kid-safe floor cleaner is a great way to ensure you are getting your floor nice and clean while also providing a safe environment for your little one to crawl around on.
How Often Should You Clean Your Floors?
You should be sweeping your floors daily and washing them as often as you can possibly squeeze into your busy parenthood life.
Since babies do put everything in their mouths, it is important to wash your floors every second day at the maximum, and daily if you have pets. I personally like to clean the kitchen floors daily regardless of how dirty the floor looks, I use my faithful friend to sweep for me, while I take care of other tasks. Then I can quickly pass a mop and woosh- I am done!
